Emsworth Primary School

The Aim: If you have a heart for the younger generation this is an opportunity to give your time to encourage and support children in their learning within Emsworth Primary school. Schools are under an enormous amount of pressure to meet the needs of all the children in their care and the headmistress is very happy to accept our offer to listen to children reading as this is so important for their progress.

More Information

  • We currently have a team of volunteers who go into the school on Monday and Tuesday each week between 1.30pm and 3.00pm. We aim to send two or three volunteers each day to be able to listen to as many children as possible. The volunteers go in once a fortnight.

  • We're looking for people with a willingness to engage with and invest time in children's lives.

You will primarily need good listening skills and a sensitivity to be aware if children are sharing information that seems to be of concern that you need to pass on to school staff.

A DBS is required — the church will help with this process and further training will be given by the school.

  • The volunteers work together in an area set aside separate to the classroom.

Each person will listen in a 1 to 1 role to a child who will bring a book of their choice with them.

There is a range of ability, with some children working in their second language so sensitivity is needed to give gentle encouragement.

After 10 to 15 mins that child will return to the classroom and send out the next person to read to you.
